There are two lawyers named Robert Kaner who attended the University of Minnesota law school, but only one of them is dead.

Duluth lawyer Robert M. Kaner, 63, wants clients and friends to know he’s the one still alive, the Duluth News Tribune reports. Toward that end, he paid for an advertisement in the newspaper’s obituary section on Wednesday proclaiming that he is “alive and well.”

Kaner took out the ad after an obituary ran in the Tuesday paper for Robert L. Kaner, 67, a distant relative, the story says. Both Kaners went to the same law school, both are single, both grew up in the area, and both practiced in the Duluth public defender’s office early in their careers. Robert L. Kaner went on to practice law in Minneapolis.

“I received many calls from concerned friends and clients expressing concern that I had died,” Kaner told the newspaper. “All those calls from concerned clients and friends led me to believe I should announce that I am alive and still practicing law in Duluth.”

Kaner’s ad thanks those who called him and expresses condolences to the family of the other Robert Kaner.
