Indiana AG Sues Fla. Lawyer, Says Home-Loan Modification Business Operated Illegally
A Florida attorney has been sued by the Indiana attorney general over a home-loan modification business that the AG contends the lawyer is operating illegally in his state.
In addition to the lawyer, Thomas Matevia, and his Legal Home Loan Solutions business, the AG has also named as defendants the Matevia Law Firm and Federal Home Loan Solutions, which Matevia allegedly owns as well, reports the Real Time blog of the Palm Beach Post.
AG Greg Zoeller alleges violations of the Credit Services Organization Act, the Mortgage Rescue Protection Act and Deceptive Consumer Sales Act and says the loan-modification business improperly collected up-front payments from consumers before performing services. He also says the business failed to refund fees for work that wasn’t performed and didn’t initially post a surety bond, as such companies are required to do, according to the Indianapolis Star.
The Hendricks County suit lists over 20 claimed victims and seeks restitution and penalties of as much as $5,000 per violation.
Matevia, who is shown as a member of the Florida bar in good standing with no disciplinary history in the past decade, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Palm Beach Post this morning.
