Plans to arm teachers and administrators with guns at school are blocked by insurers
After the massacre of 20 children and six adults in a Connecticut elementary school shooting late last year, some called for gun control and others suggested that a better answer would be to arm those at the schools.
But an unexpected roadblock has emerged in the seven states in which lawmakers have made it legal for teachers and administrators to carry guns in the classroom. Some insurance companies have said they will deny coverage to schools in which educators are armed, reports the New York Times (reg. req.).
Not only liability concerns but potential worker’s compensation issues have been raised by carriers.
“Some are saying this is so high risk we’re not going to touch it,” said Kenneth S. Trump, who serves as president of National School Safety and Security Services. “Others may say this is so high risk that you’re going to pay through the nose.”
