Baghad native Khalid Abood put his life on the line as an interpreter for the U.S. Marines. He received death threats and some of his relatives were gunned down.

Thanks to the tireless work of an Iraq war veteran who lobbied to bring Abood to the United States, Abood has a new job as an interpreter in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, the New York Sun reports.

Capt. Zachary Iscol credits Abood’s work with keeping his men safe, the Washington Post reported in a Sept. 2 story. He made dozens of calls and sent dozens of e-mails every day in his lobbying effort.

“This country is doing me a great favor,” Abood told the Sun. “I have to give my best service to the country and to the people.
