Jacoby & Meyers is merging with Macey Bankruptcy Law as part of a plan to expand into new practice areas.

The merger will create a 300-plus lawyer firm with more than 135 offices. A press release calls the combination “the most significant merger for consumer law in U.S. history.” Macey Bankruptcy Law is the country’s largest consumer bankruptcy firm, the release says. The bankruptcy practice section will now be called Jacoby & Meyers-Bankruptcy.

Jacoby is known for personal injury work, but it wants to grow in areas such as criminal defense, pharmaceutical litigation and Social Security disability law.

The National Law Journal (reg. req.) spoke with Chase Givens, mergers and acquisitions manager at Jacoby. He said more mergers are possible this year, including mergers with firms with targeted practice areas. “This is a huge step,” he said, referring to the plans.
