Jailed Ex-Lawyer's $1M Restitution Is Reduced by $350 Taken From His Prison Store Account
Imprisoned for violating his probation by secreting some $500,000 in assets that could have been applied to his $1 million restitution in an obstruction of justice case, the former mayor of Detroit is apparently still living too high on the hog.
Officials at the Department of Correction have seized almost $350 from the prison store account of Kwame Kilpatrick, a former lawyer, and applied it to his restitution, as they are allowed to do under rules that permit half of every deposit that exceeds $50 to be confiscated, reports the Detroit News.
There are also strict rules limiting how much can be spent at the prison store, to prevent inmates from using goods from the store in trade with other inmates.
“It’s not a huge amount, but we will continue to monitor his accounts and will plug away at his restitution,” Russell Marlan tells the newspaper. He is a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections.
Kilpatrick now owes about $860,000 in restitution, having paid the rest of the $1 million he initially owed.
