Congressman Indicted
U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., was indicted today on more than a dozen charges stemming from a bribery probe, Associated Press reports.
Federal officials are organizing a press conference to announce the indictment.
The indictment detailing the evidence is more than an inch thick, a Justice Department official told the AP. Charges against Jefferson include racketeering, soliciting bribes and money-laundering, according to the report.
Federal officials found more than $90,000 in cash stored in a freezer when they raided Jefferson’s home in 2005.
Jefferson maintains his innocence in the case. He could not be reached for comment on the indictment.
