Jilted husband blames attorney-owned website in alienation-of-affection suit
An attorney-owned website that helps married individuals seek out possible affair partners is one of the defendants in a North Carolina alienation-of-affection suit.
Plaintiff Robert Schindler says his wife of 13 years left him for another man she met on the Ashley Madison website. Schindler seeks damages from the man, the website and its Canadian corporate parent in the Mecklenburg Superior Court suit, the Charlotte Observer reports.
Canadian attorney Noel Biderman, who founded the website and is president of parent company Avid Life Media Inc., said the suit “defies most people’s common-sense test,” since it only allows individuals to communicate with each other.
“Would the courts also hold a hotel room accountable? A cellphone operator if his wife called her lover on it? The car she drove?” he asked rhetorically. Holding “technology and inanimate objects … utilized in an affair” liable for that affair “would be an incredibly slippery slope,” he told the newspaper.
Schindler’s wife did not respond to the newspaper’s requests for comment.
