A Pennsylvania lawyer accused of robbing a bank told a judge on Tuesday that he hasn’t worked in months and is responsible for the care of his disabled mother.

Lawyer Steven Cormier, 57, of Nesquehoning, said he has been a lawyer for more than 30 years, WNEP reports. His mother, Cary Sinclair, told the broadcast station that she thought her son was looking for a job during the time he was accused of robbing a Wells Fargo Bank inside a mall near Pottsville.

Sinclair said her son lost his job earlier this year and he takes care of her both physically and financially. “I know he’s been on unemployment,” she told WNEP. “In fact I asked him last night how long that was going to last. He said about a month.”

Police say they found Cormier in his getaway car after the robbery Tuesday morning. He had nearly $16,000 in the car. He is accused of warning a teller that “things are going to get ugly” if she didn’t fill a bag with cash. The Republican Herald and the Morning Call have stories on the robbery.

Cormier is charged with robbery, terroristic threats, theft and receiving stolen property.
