Women over 50 have been particularly hard hit by the recession, according to a new study on long-term unemployment.

Many of these older women are paid less and use fewer skills than before the recession, the New York Times reports. A new study by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis demonstrates the challenges for women in this age group, the story says.

Two years before the recession, in 2006-07, 23 percent of women aged 50 to 64 who were unemployed had been out of work for six months or longer, according to the study. But two years after the recession, in 2012-13, half of the unemployed women in this age group had been out of work more than six months.

The Times spoke with lawyer Karen Lamkin, who has 25 years of experience and has not been able to find a job for three years. β€œI have been told in interviews that they want somebody younger,” Lamkin told the Times. β€œIt does not matter that I would be satisfied with the salary for a junior position.”
