Jones Day doesn’t believe in paying associates bonuses, since this tends to suggest an incorrect correlation between simply billing time and generating personal income, the BigLaw firm explains on its website.

And now, in an internal memo published by Above the Law, the firm is eliminating a year-end bonus program for its staff, too.

After thanking staff for their hard work, administrative partner Hugh Whiting announces that year-end payments will not be made to staff in December this year and that the program is being discontinued.

“As is the case with our lawyers, we think the firm is best-served when compensation for all employees is based on performance and contributions to the firm,” he writes.

Requests for comment by the ABA Journal to a firm spokesman didn’t receive an immediate response late Tuesday afternoon.
