After representing the city of Detroit in a big-bucks municipal bankruptcy case that brought in over $50 million in fees, Jones Day has decided to maintain an office in Detroit permanently.

The new office, which will open its doors July 1 in a location that has not been announced, will be the 17th in the U.S. and the 42nd internationally for the 2,400-attorney law firm.

“Detroit has always been and will continue to be one of the great cities of the United States,” said managing partner Steve Brogan in a Jones Day press release. “Together with the state of Michigan, which has been critical to Detroit’s emergence from bankruptcy, the city has an exciting and promising future. The contribution of corporate America, including many of our existing clients, will be essential to the rebirth of this great metropolitan area.”

Timothy Melton, a corporate partner with capital markets expertise, will be in charge of the new office.
