Judge acquitted of battery based on insanity is ordered removed from the bench
An Illinois judge who was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a misdemeanor battery case has been ordered removed from the bench.
The Illinois Courts Commission ordered the immediate removal of Judge Cynthia Brim on Friday, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Brim, a Cook County judge, had argued she could control her bipolar disorder with medication.
Brim was acquitted in a bench trial in February 2013. The alleged incident began, police said, when Brim approached officers at a security checkpoint at the courthouse in Chicago and asked if they had found any keys. The officers showed her three sets of keys, and she claimed one of them.
A few minutes later she returned, threw her keys at one deputy and shoved another, according to authorities.
Brim was suspended after the battery charges were filed, but she continued to earn her $182,000 salary, according to past coverage by the Chicago Tribune.
