A Texas judge was arrested Saturday and charged with assault after his girlfriend complained that he had choked her, a Dallas police report says.

However, an attorney for State District Judge Carlos Raul Cortez, 44, said he did nothing wrong and suggests that a case against him may not be pursued, reports the Dallas Morning News.

“The allegations made by the complainant are false. If necessary, it will be shown in the proper forum that Judge Cortez actually saved her life,” said attorney Andrew Korn in a written statement provided to the newspaper. The statement doesn’t provide details of what the judge did to help the woman.

Cortez presides over a civil call in Dallas County.
