A federal judge in California has taken a bite out of Apple’s request for $5.8 million in costs in its successful patent case against Samsung.
U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh of San Francisco allowed only $1.8 million in costs after a partial damages retrial that gave Apple a total award of about $930 million. The Recorder (sub. req.) has details of Koh’s decision (PDF) on costs, issued Friday.
Apple initially sought $6.2 million in costs, then trimmed the amount to $5.8 million, according to Koh’s order.
Among the disallowed costs:
• Apple had sought $1.5 million for printed copies of electronic files, but Koh denied the entire amount, citing a lack of appropriate documentation.
• Apple requested $123,000 for the cost of about 180 Samsung smartphones and tablets, as well as about 25 iPhones and iPads. Koh allowed only $22,000 for the devices that were actually used at trial, but did not grant costs for devices examined by expert witnesses.
• Apple sought about $1.6 million for trial graphics and other demonstratives, but Koh allowed only about half the cost.
