A former New York judge was sentenced to a 33-month prison term today for conspiring with a reputed mobster to launder $400,000 in claimed proceeds from stolen jewelry.

David Gross, 45, who served on the Nassau County District Court bench from 1999 to 2005, could have been sentenced to as much as 20 years after pleading guilty in July, reports Newsday. He will begin serving his sentence in January and is expected to be disbarred, according to prosecutors.

The case against the former judge reportedly evolved out of an FBI investigation into illegal gambling operations allegedly involving the Genovese and Gambino crime families. In January 2005, during his re-election campaign, Gross was introduced by an a claimed Genovese crime family member to an undercover FBI agent who was posing as a jewel thief and sought the judge’s help with the money-laundering scheme, according to the Long Island newspaper.
