Judge Detains 2 Teens, Puts Ankle Monitor on Boy, 11, for Flash Mob Attack on Law Student and Others
An angry juvenile court judge yesterday told two teenagers and an 11-year-old boy that their “actions, behavior, and attitude” concerning a July 29 flash mob attack by a large group on pedestrians were “appalling and disgusting for civilized society,” before pronouncing sentence.
The Center City Philadelphia attack left four victims, including a 25-year-old law student, bruised and bloody, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Judge Kevin Dougherty put a 17-year-old boy described as an alleged ringleader of the group into a juvenile detention facility where he could be held until age 21 and sent a 16-year-old to a residential school for delinquents. An 11-year-old boy was put on home confinement with his grandmother, and will wear an ankle bracelet to confirm his whereabouts.
The defendants, who pleaded guilty to charges of assault, robbery and riot, appeared unconcerned about the court proceedings, according to the newspaper article, and Dougherty ordered the girlfriend of the 16-year-old removed from the courtroom for rolling her eyes.
A lawyer for the 17-year-old described him as scared, but the judge said he saw no remorse for the attack. “I’m putting you away,” he told the teen.
