Judge nixes attorney fees for lawyer in oil spill case, says client's signature on doc was forged
Saying that he believes a plaintiff’s signature on a legal representation document concerning the Gulf of Mexico oil spill was forged, a federal judge in New Orleans nixed attorney fees for a Texas lawyer.
Attorney Brent Coon had sought a 25 percent share of an undisclosed settlement his claimed client, fisherman Dien Nguyen, got from BP, the Houston Chronicle’s Fuel Fix blog reports.
Another attorney who also said he represented Nguyen, James J. Dailey of Alabama, was the subject of a similar ruling, although it isn’t clear he had sought any payment of attorney fees, the newspaper notes.
“It is clear to me Mr. Dailey or Mr. Coon didn’t provide legal work entitling them to legal fees,” U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier said.
