Judge Rules for Juror Who Received a Pink Slip

A juror who received a pink slip from her employer after serving four months as a juror in a death penalty trial has gotten her job back.

Juror Christine Madison will be reinstated and will receive back wages and attorney fees, according to a press release by the law firm that represented her, Feldesman Tucker Leifer Fidell.

A ruling (PDF posted by Feldesman Tucker) last week by U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer said the District of Columbia State Education Office had refused to renew Madison’s 13-month employment contract because of her jury service. Collyer found that Madison qualified as a permanent employee protected by a federal law barring retaliation for jury service.
