By day, Philip Maier is an administrative law judge in New York, applying the rule of law to resolve labor disputes.

But at night the 49-year-old jurist can often be found duking it out with other professionals in the boxing ring, reports the Epoch Times. A participant in a 20-year-old sport known as white-collar boxing, Maier says the activity is a great way to stay in shape and make friends.

Although a primary goal during the three two-minute rounds that constitute unofficial matches—no winner is declared—is to avoid hurting himself or anyone else, Maier does admit to having once knocked out a wild opponent who he says was trying to kill him, the New York newspaper recounts.

He recommends the sport to others, and notes that they don’t have to go into the ring to benefit from it.

“You don’t necessarily have to spar,” he points out. “I think in terms of an overall workout for you body and for your mind also, boxing is unparalleled because it keeps you in shape physically and it’s good for your cardiovascular systems, it’s good for your reflexes, it’s good for muscle tone and it’s good for you mentally.

“If you don’t want to get hit, you don’t have to get hit. You can just hit the bag and get a good workout just doing that.”
