Jury Deadlocks in Federal Mortgage Fraud Trial of Lawyer and Two Former Police Officers
After almost a week of deliberations, a federal jury has deadlocked in a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., mortgage fraud trial of an lawyer who is the owner of a local title company and two former Plantation police officers.
Attorney Steven Stoll had faced 34 counts, but his lawyer, Bruce Zimet, said Stoll didn’t know about loan application fraud committed by others. A prior trial of other defendants in the case resulted in the conviction of some and the acquittal of others, the Sun-Sentinel reports.
Prosecutors declined to comment about whether they will retry the case following Monday’s hung jury. A hearing is scheduled next month.
Another attorney originally charged in the case entered into a pretrial diversion agreement with prosecutors before the earlier trial began, the Straw Buyer reports, linking to the agreement.
