Justice Department Employees Violated Nepotism Laws by Hiring Relatives, Report Says
Eight employees in a Justice Department division that oversees the hiring of administrative and back-office workers violated nepotism laws and regulations by hiring relatives, according to a report by the DOJ’s ethics watchdog.
Inspector General Michael Horowitz says the career employees sought to get their relatives hired, or manipulated the hiring process to secure positions for their children or the children of other employees. Most of the misconduct “was the result of bad behavior by individuals insufficiently impressed with the principles of fair and open competition,” Horowitz said in the report (PDF). The same division was also criticized for nepotism in 2004 and 2008.
