The Justice Department said in court papers on Monday that it may be able to hack the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone without assistance from Apple.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym of Riverside, California, agreed to the government’s request to cancel a hearing scheduled for Tuesday on the FBI request to force Apple to help, report the San Jose Mercury News, the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Recorder.

The FBI wants to access the phone of now-deseased San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook, who was killed along with his wife after they killed 14 people in December. Apple has objected to the government’s efforts to force it to help.

The government’s court filing said an outside party had demonstrated to the FBI a possible method to unlock the phone. The FBI wants to test the hack to make sure it won’t compromise data on the phone.

The government will file a status report on its efforts by April 5.
