Justice Department's inspector general will review handling of Clinton email probe
The Justice Department’s inspector general announced on Thursday he will review how the FBI and Justice Department handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation.
Inspector General Michael Horowitz said his probe would include whether improper considerations influenced investigative decisions. He also plans to investigate whether proper procedures were followed regarding the initial announcement of the closed probe and an Oct. 28 disclosure that newly discovered emails were being investigated. FBI Director James Comey ultimately concluded after the second review that prosecution wasn’t warranted, echoing his earlier conclusion in July that “no reasonable prosecutor” would bring a case against Clinton for her use of a private email server while secretary of state.
Clinton has blamed the Oct. 28 disclosure for her election loss.
Horowitz will also investigate whether a Justice Department lawyer improperly disclosed nonpublic information to the Clinton campaign, and whether the Justice Department and FBI improperly disclosed nonpublic information.
He said he was opening the investigation because of requests from lawmakers, organizations and members of the public.
