Justice Elena Kagan showed up for jury duty in Washington, D.C., superior court on Thursday.

She was released in the afternoon and didn’t collect her $4 transportation stipend, ABC News reports.

She passed the time reading what appeared to be a legal brief while making notes in the margin, the story says. She was also observed “chatting warmly” with some people who recognized her.

The justice who once faced criticism from the Washington Post for her wardrobe dressed in dark trousers and a checkered patterned sweater jacket for her jury service.
