Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was hospitalized for observation overnight after she experienced a bad reaction to a combination of a prescription sleeping pill and an over-the-counter cold medication.

Ginsburg, 76, experienced extreme drowsiness, causing her to fall from her seat while on a plane awaiting takeoff for a flight to London, according to The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times.

A statement from the Supreme Court said Ginsburg was evaluated at Washington Hospital Center and found to be in stable health. She was released this morning.

Ginsburg was traveling to London to celebrate the recent launch of the United Kingdom Supreme Court, according to The BLT. The blog reports that Ginsburg appeared frail during oral arguments in the past two weeks, but she was “an active and alert questioner.”

Ginsburg had surgery for pancreatic cancer in February, but was back at the court less than three weeks later. She was also hospitalized for a night in September after she felt faint, a reaction to slightly low blood pressure caused by an iron treatment for anemia.

Doctors who performed a comprehensive exam in July found Ginsburg to be in normal health, except for the iron deficiency.

From all the news reports, it’s starting to sound as though Justice Ginsberg’s is attempting to hide the fact that her health is steadily declining.  Given her very recent history of pancreatic cancer, which has the lowest survival rate of any cancer, her increasingly frequent hospitalizations and the fact that she’s aged 76, when the average lifespan of the American woman is 78, I would not be surprised if her health took a sudden turn for the worst.

I wish her nothing but the best of health.

Just curious though.  Have any justices ever been addicted to prescription pain medication, alcohol etc or is that swept under the rug.  I am sure with the stress of what they go through, some of those guys have to be popping pills left and right.
