Justice Thomas’ Book Royalties Now Total $1.5M

Justice Clarence Thomas earned more last year in book royalties than he earned for his work on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Thomas earned $300,000 last year in sales of his book, My Grandfather's Son, boosting his total earnings from the memoir to $1.5 million, the Associated Press reports. Yet he remains one of the least wealthy members of the court, with a net worth ranging from $150,000 to $410,000.

Justice Antonin Scalia made almost $100,000 from sales of his new book, Making Your Case, while Stephen G. Breyer made nearly $55,000 in royalties from his 2005 book, Active Liberty.

The totals were disclosed in financial disclosure forms released Friday, the New York Times reports. Other revelations:

• Justice Stephen G. Breyer sold stock in a dozen companies, in a move designed to allow him to participate in more cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

• The court’s wealthiest members appear to be Justices David H. Souter, worth between about $6 million and $27.6 million, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, worth between $7.2 million to just under $30 million.
