Justice Thomas left Nice shortly before attack
Justice Clarence Thomas left Nice, France on Thursday, hours before the terrorist attack that killed at least 84 people.
Thomas was in Nice to teach constitutional law in a study abroad program for the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The program is held in partnership with the University of Nice School of Law, according to a March press release announcing Thomas’ participation.
Thomas was taking the place of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who had been scheduled to teach for the fifth time.
Thomas Jefferson law school spokesman Edgar Hopida told the Union-Tribune on Thursday that there were no reports of any injuries or deaths among the students, though not all of them had been accounted for.
The New York Times and the Washington Post have stories on the attack believed to have been carried out by Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel. The attacker drove his truck into spectators and fired on them during a Bastille Day fireworks celebration. He was shot and killed by police.
