K&L Gates managers have voted to elect Peter Kalis to a fifth term as the firm’s chair and global managing partner. His term runs through February 2017.

Kalis has served as head of the firm, previously known as Kirkpatrick & Lockhart, since 1997 and has overseen a massive expansion from six offices in the eastern United States through eight mergers that have planted the firm in 41 offices on four continents.

Announced in a news release Tuesday, the vote comes on the heels of news of key partner moves from the firm’s Chicago office. When K&L Gates acquired Chicago’s Bell Boyd & Lloyd in 2009, there were 218 lawyers in the office. Now there are 128.

Kalis responded to criticism with a detailed memo touting the firm’s financial stability and noting it is outperforming the market.
