Karma and Chicago Judge Favor Worker Who Tried to Return Mistaken Paycheck
A worker for the Chicago public schools says she believes in karma after winning a collections case involving an extra, mistaken paycheck that she repeatedly tried to repay.
Carol Collins-Watts, a Chicago schools therapist, represented herself in the case, the Chicago Tribune reports. She says she repeatedly offered to repay $1,366.94 that was mistakenly deposited into her account, but the Chicago schools refused. Instead, the school district wanted the gross amount of the paycheck, $2,401.58.
The Chicago schools turned the case over to a collections agency and then filed suit. A judge ruled last week that the schools were not entitled to the higher amount and Collins-Watts could keep the $1,366.94, the story says. She plans to give the money to charity.
“I don’t know if you believe in karma, but I do,” she told the newspaper.
