King & Spalding is building its litigation practice in California by hiring 14 lawyers from Filice Brown Eassa & McLeod in Oakland.

The group includes three partners: Gennero “Gus” Filice III, Peter Strotz and Nicholas Kayhan, the Recorder reports. Filice, one of the founders of Filice Brown, told the publication that he wasn’t looking to leave, but he was pleased when he was contacted by King & Spalding.

Another Filice Brown co-founder, Eugene Brown, told the Recorder that King & Spalding also tried to cherry pick himself and partner Robert Eassa, but they refused to go because of concern for those who would be left behind. “We weren’t interested in leaving them high and dry,” Brown said.

The firm, now called Brown Eassa & McLeod, will have about 17 lawyers after the departures, down from 45 lawyers at its peak four years ago, according to the story. Brown Eassa plans to expand, though, by hiring a few midlevel associates, Brown says.

A press release has more information on the departures.
