Kirkland & Ellis has laid off more than 20 associates in New York and has also reportedly chosen not to retain associates in the firm's Washington, D.C. and Chicago offices.
The Wall Street Journal Law Blog reports that the layoffs came at the end of the firm's annual associate-review process.
"Associates deemed to have not been on track to make either equity partner or nonequity partner were asked to leave," the Law Blog reports.
Still, layoffs were higher this year because of the economy and general lack of attrition firmwide.
JD Journal notes that Kirkland hasn’t instituted layoffs since the same period last year. The blog also reports that a "significant percentage of summer associates" were extended offers.

Too many lawyers do not realize that being a lawyer is nothing more than a glorified sales position in which we doing legal work. The only people who win are those who can go out and get new clients. If you can’t bring in clients, you will not have a job.

Could be the leading edge of the “September Slaughter.”

Just another example to point out to the law students and law student wannabes that they should SERIOUSLY consider NOT pursuing a legal career and, instead, go into a career or trade they would actually enjoy doing. Hustling clients and billable hours is where it’s at - and neither require great LEGAL ability.
