Questions about law firms on a recent Jeopardy show brought in big bucks in the Double Jeopardy round of the television game program, for those who could correctly answer them.

The fourth item, which was for $1,600, was: “Tops for patent litigation per U.S. News & World Report, Fish & Richardson specializes in IP, short for this.” It stumped one contestant before another supplied the correct response: “What is intellectual property?”

Bloomberg Law and the Wall Street Journal Law Blog (sub. req.) have stories about the program, including the full slate of law firm questions and answers.

“Our devices were literally buzzing non-stop with clients, colleagues, and everyone’s mom telling us we were on Jeopardy!,” said president Peter Devlin of Fish & Richardson in a written statement to Bloomberg. “Our ranking as the number one patent litigation firm in the country for the past 12 consecutive years is something our firm has worked hard to achieve, so it is exciting for us that Jeopardy! discovered and used this fact on their show.”

Nonetheless, those at the firm were a bit surprised that the IP question was a tough one, he noted. “We live and breathe IP law all day long, so we just assume everyone knows what it is. At least they do now.”
