In Los Angeles’ continuing struggle with medical marijuana dispensaries, the city attorney’s office recently filed actions against those located within 600 feet of a school, which is a violation of state law.

So far nine business have been sued for the violation, the Los Angeles Times reports. The city attorney’s office stated that more cases may be filed next week. The filings seek civil penalties of up to $5,000 a day if the dispensaries remain open.

Besides the state law, the city of Los Angeles ordinance excludes dispensaries within 1,000 feet of a school. The agency told the Los Angeles Times that they did not target dispensaries that far out, because the city ordinance has faced many legal challenges.
