Laid Off After Many Years in Court Job, Georgia Lawyer Makes Lemonade

As budget cuts resulted in layoffs this week for four lawyers who have each worked at the Georgia Court of Appeals for well over a decade, at least one member of the group is looking forward to an exciting career change.

After walking out the door for the last time at her now-former job on Tuesday, M. Katherine Durant hung out her own shingle on Wednesday, reports the Daily Report. Although she never intended to change jobs, she had daydreamed for years about forming her own appellate practice.

"I've seen firsthand the myriad ways that lawyers can bungle an appeal," she tells the legal publication, explaining that she plans to market her legal services statewide to those who need an expert co-counsel. "Trial lawyers without the time or inclination to learn how to do an appeal properly will need me to help them."

This is NOT the subject of the article.  It has nothing to do with LEMONADE.  It has to do with going out and starting her own firm.

Kudos to her.  Women can do anything they want, but they do NOT have to leave the law to go make lemonade.

The ABA is trivilaizing the work of women by putting this DUMB headline out.

If men go out on their own, they are not making lemonade, are they?  When my boyfriend went in-house, no one said ANYTHING about his career choice or LEMONADE.  Why here?

So why are women so demonized?  We must survive in a male dominated legal society, so this is what we put up with?

I say FOOEY on the ABA for this title.  Change it please?

This is the story of a woman who, through absolutely no fault of her own, found herself unemployed. Thus, the lemon. She turned the fact of being suddenly unemployed (the lemon) into a new career path - self-employment, assisting appellate lawyers in their appeals (lemonade). It has nothing to do with male dominated societies, demonization of women, or any of the other liberal claptrap you’ve been brainwashed into believing.

The old saying goes “when life hands you a lemon, make lemonade”.  It is gender neutral.  The post by Ellen Barshevsky above is misplaced, and she is misguided by her own paranoia.
