An apparent scammer is using a caller ID number that routes phone calls to a Florida law firm.

The James Hoyer law firm is receiving so many phone calls that its switchboard operator is close to losing her voice, 10News reports. The calls started coming in on Dec. 1.

The scammer, who is apparently seeking credit and debit card numbers, tells potential victims they should call a number to claim a prize. Instead of calling that number, many are calling the number displayed on caller ID. Though the number has a Washington area code, the callers are routed to the James Hoyer firm in Tampa. The switchboard operator is warning callers not to give out any personal information.

Chris Hoyer, a founding partner of the James Hoyer law firm who is a former federal prosecutor, told 10News that it’s ironic that their phone number has been used, because his law firm assists fraud victims. According to the firm’s website, its lawyers file qui tam suits and consumer class actions.

“I would personally like to choke these bums,” Hoyer said of the alleged scammers.

When News10 called the prize claim number, a man said he would smash the journalist and began using profanity.
