A list of the best workplaces to work in the Chicago area includes only two law firms: Sidley Austin and Perkins Coie.

The Chicago Tribune published the list based on a survey of employees by WorkPlace Dynamics. Sidley was eighth among large employers, and Perkins Coie was 19th among small employers.

The Tribune includes a profile of Sidley, which is currently representing the newspaper in bankruptcy proceedings. Some law firms promote competition, but at Sidley, partner success is partly based on cooperation, the story says. The firm touts a “culture of collegiality” as one of its institutional values.

To promote teamwork, the firm keeps partner compensation secret. The idea is to eliminate jealousies.

A short write-up on Perkins Coie says the Chicago office sponsors charity events, supports green initiatives, and has a happiness committee that delivers treats to the office.
