Law Firm Sued Twice by Trump Allowed to Oppose him in Condo Case
Morrison Cohen has been sued twice by former client Donald Trump. Now the New York law firm will be opposing him on behalf of a client sued in connection with an Israeli condo project.
On Monday Judge Herman Cahn of Manhattan refused to disqualify the firm and partner Y. David Scharf from representing members of a group that had licensed the right to build a Trump Tower in Israel, the New York Law Journal reports. Trump claims in a suit that the group broke the agreement to pay him royalties on condo sales when it abandoned plans to build and instead sold the land.
Trump had argued the law firm should be disqualified because it had confidential information about his business practices. Cahn said in his ruling (PDF posted by the New York Law Journal) that the condo suit differs from past cases in which the firm represented Trump, the story says.
One of Trump’s lawsuits against Morrison Cohen claims the firm and Scharf overcharged him, treating him like a “cash cow.” Another says the firm invaded his privacy by listing his name on its website as a past client. Morrison Cohen, in turn, has sued Trump for $470,000 in unpaid legal bills.
