Law Grad Who Reportedly Faked Bar ID Is Charged with Stealing $176K From Indian Tribe
A graduate of Brigham Young University’s law school who reportedly served previously as a military lawyer after faking his membership in the California bar has been charged with stealing from an Indian tribe in Utah.
Jeffrey Zander served as general counsel for the tribe, according to the Deseret News.
However, the Salt Lake Tribune says he served as the economic development and trust resource director for the Paiute Indian Tribe and five constituent bands.
He was federally charged yesterday with money laundering, failing to file a tax return and 22 counts of theft from a federally funded program, after being indicted last month.
An Associated Press article says he pleaded not guilty today in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City.
He is accused of stealing some $176,000 of the tribe’s money.
