Law grad with gun is shot and killed by police outside home of slain physician
Police shot and killed a law grad with a gun outside the home of a slain Minnesota physician on Friday.
The former law student was identified as 30-year-old Ted Hoffstrom, a 2009 University of St. Thomas law grad, report the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Minneapolis Star Tribune and KSTP.com. He had passed the Minnesota bar exam in October.
The slain doctor was 73-year-old Stephen Larson, a prominent expert on pelvic surgery who founded a medical group in Edina and Burnsville. Police would not comment on links between Larson and Hoffstrom, though a source told KSTP.com that the men knew each other.
Police were called to the home when a person speaking with Larson on the phone heard gunshots and called police, KSTP.com says. The shooter had arrived at the door during the phone conversation, the source told the broadcast station. Both Larson and Hoffstrom died from multiple gunshots.
Hoffstrom had worked as an intern at the Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights, Hennepin County District Court, the Minnesota State Senate and the Hennepin County Drug Court, the Pioneer Press says. He also worked as an intern at Nichols Kaster & Anderson and did volunteer campaign work for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party, according to the Star Tribune.
Family members issued a statement expressing sympathy for Larson’s family. A spokeswoman for the family said she never saw him angry and he appeared to be happy, caring, educated, fit and driven, according to the Pioneer Press article.
