Law Profs Sign Letter Calling Obama's Contraception Compromise Unacceptable
Clarification: Several law professors have signed a letter that says President Obama’s compromise on contraception coverage is unacceptable.
Primary authors of the letter include Catholic University president John Garvey, Harvard law professor Mary Ann Glendon and Princeton University jurisprudence professor Robert George, the Deseret News reports. Others signing the letter include Brigham Young law professors Cole Durham and Lynn Wardle, and Stanford law professor Michael McConnell.
Under the compromise, religious hospitals and universities would not have to pay for their employees’ birth control, but insurers would have to pick up the costs, the New York Times reported last week. The letter (PDF), signed by more than 100 scholars and religious leaders, says the compromise is “a grave violation of religious freedom and cannot stand.”
“This so-called ‘accommodation’ changes nothing of moral substance and fails to remove the assault on religious liberty and the rights of conscience which gave rise to the controversy,” the letter says.
