Law Student Cited for Loud Party Challenges Noise Ordinance in State Supreme Court
If no one complains about a law student’s loud party, is there a noise ordinance violation?
That legal question is before the Georgia Supreme Court in an appeal by Ian Grady, who was ticketed for a loud party held to celebrate his admission to law school, the Athens Banner-Herald reports. Grady is identified as an Emory law student on LinkedIn.
Grady was ticketed and fined $350 for loud music played by a live band at the party at 3:30 a.m. His lawyer, Charles Jones Jr., argues the ordinance interferes with Grady’s right to free speech and is not the least restrictive way to preserve peace and quiet.
A Morris News Service story on oral arguments says Grady’s case “ran into some heavy static” before the supreme court on Tuesday.
