An N-word comment on Instagram was made by someone who hijacked a law student’s account after stealing her phone, according to a statement issued by her school, Barry University’s Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law in Florida.

Law student Daniella Pedrozo filed a police report on Friday after the messages were posted on Thursday, report the Miami Herald and Gossip Extra in posts here and here. Pedrozo told police her cellphone was stolen after she left it on a bus leaving Miami International Airport.

The offensive comment was made in response to a post by blogger Karen Civil on grand jury decisions not to indict police officers for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. “The only Americans questioning the system are the African Americans. As a lawyer, get over it,” wrote the person commenting through Pedrozo’s Instagram account.

When Civil replied that the commenter should “get off my page,” the commenter using Pedrozo’s account said, “block me you n—–.”

Law school dean Leticia Diaz wrote on the school’s Facebook page that the law student’s lost phone was not password protected and the remarks were apparently posted by the person who took the phone. In a later post, Diaz wrote,”I have heard from many members of our Barry Law family and others about the statement I released this morning. I want to assure you that we are continuing to investigate this matter, fully.”

In both posts, Diaz stressed that the law school does not condone nor tolerate discriminatory remarks or behavior.
