Veterans Helped by Law Students in Traveling Winnebago Law Office
Law students at the University of Detroit Mercy law school aren’t waiting for low-income veterans to come to them with their legal troubles.
Instead the students are traveling the country in a donated Winnebago to meet with the veterans and help them obtain disability and pension benefits, the National Law Journal reports. In just the first year of the program, the students have already helped more than 2,000 veterans in 11 states.
The students typically meet with the veterans, research the claims and turn those with merit over to any of the more than 740 pro bono lawyers recruited to help. The law school calls the program Project Salute.
Law professor Tammy Kudialsi says she knows of no other similar mobile law clinics. “We pack up the show and take it on the road,” she told the NLJ.
