A 68-year-old Illinois lawyer accused of trying to smuggle drugs into a federal prison was reportedly shot early Thursday in the parking lot at Harrah’s casino in Metropolis.

Sources close to the case told WSILTV.com that the shooting victim was lawyer and former judge Robert Drew of downstate Marion, Ill. He was arrested in August on charges of trying to smuggle heroin and marijuana into a Terre Haute, Ind., prison.

Drew is in stable condition at a hospital in Evansville, the story says.

Drew told police he was delivering the drugs because of anonymous telephone threats. The Daily Republican and the Tribune Star have published stories in August on the arrest.

Updated at 10 a.m. to include information about Drew’s condition.
