A lawyer from South Africa says she and her significant other have achieved something no one else has done: They are the first pair to row a boat from Africa to North America, with no other vessel to help them complete their journey.

Lawyer Vasti Geldenhuy, 36, completed the Atlantic crossing with Riaan Manser, a 40-year-old professional adventurer, the New York Times reports. They used a custom-made, high-tech rowboat on their six-month trip, with stops along the way, including in the Bahamas. They arrived in New York on Friday.

The couple survived on dried food and fresh fish, caught with a fishing line almost always in the water, the story says. They drank water from a solar-powered saltwater converter. At night they would sleep in the boat’s small cabin while their boat drifted. They used video cameras to document their trip.
