A Houston lawyer has filed a complaint with the Texas Attorney General’s office that claims the Dallas Zoo is violating state law by posting a sign banning guns on the property.
Lawyer T. Edwin Walker maintains the zoo doesn’t qualify for an exemption under the law that generally allows guns on government-owned land, report the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) and the Dallas Morning News. Following the procedure called for in a new law, he first complained to the zoo and then filed his complaint with the attorney general.
Walker has also protested no-gun signs at Houston Zoo, which removed the signs but said it is exploring its legal options.
The Dallas Zoo is on public land but is run by a nonprofit group. The zoo’s lawyer says the zoo can ban guns under exemptions for educational institutions and amusement parks.
Dallas could face fines as high as $10,500 a day if found to be in violation of the law, according to the Dallas Morning News.
