John Bonner III, a Minneapolis lawyer, was convicted Friday of stealing more than $6,000 from his employees’ retirement accounts.

Bonner withheld the money from employees’ paychecks. Then, instead of putting it into retirement accounts as they directed, the Hennepin County attorney’s office said, Bonner commingled the money with a general fund he used to pay himself and cover firm expenses, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

The criminal complaint against Bonner alleges that the thefts took place between March 2011 and January 2012. Bonner reportedly took more than $10,000 from employees, but the government only focused on approximately $6,000, because a three-year statute of limitations had run out on thefts that may have occurred earlier.

The case was invested by the U.S. Department of Labor, KTSP reports.
