A lawyer couple who say police punched and arrested them when they objected to the beating of a drug suspect have settled their civil suit against the city of New York.

Michael and Evelyn Warren settled the case for $360,000, report Reuters and the New York Daily News. They say the agreement represents vindication, while a spokesperson for the city law department say the couple’s allegations were never proven.

Michael Warren represents defendants in police misconduct cases and Evelyn Warren is a civil rights lawyer, according to Reuters. They say they were driving in Brooklyn in 2007 when they saw police beating a handcuffed drug suspect. According to their lawsuit, they stopped their car and told the officers their conduct was wrong and illegal.

When an officer noticed the Warrens were writing down license numbers, he allegedly punched them and arrested them for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Charges were eventually dropped.

The settlement was reached as the civil suit was scheduled for trial.
