Unfamiliar with the area, a North Carolina real estate lawyer missed a stop sign in Rutherford County yesterday, authorities say, and caused a fatal accident, reports the McDowell News.

“Physically, he is in pain. Emotionally, he is completely devastated,” says Marion, N.C., Mayor Steve Little of his 30-year-old law partner, William “Lee” Lattimore.

“He will recover physically,” Little says, “but I don’t know about otherwise.”

Lattimore, who had gotten lost, never saw the stop sign on McEntyre Road as he drove onto Turner Road in his 2004 Acura a few minutes after noon yesterday and struck a Buick occupied by James Beatty Pyle Jr., 77, and his wife, Madeline Pyle, 76, a state highway patrol trooper investigating the accident told the newspaper.

Lattimore wasn’t talking or texting on his cell phone, Little said. No charges have been filed at this time.
